NSOC

The Home of The Broncos with blue and gold pride!  Greenwood Elementary School is a New Jersey School of Character and National School of Character.  We are a Kindness Certified School that educated a student body of over 275 children who come from culturally rich family backgrounds. Our goal is to respect individual differences and build new partnerships while strengthening the home-school-community relationship. As a school community, we understand that such partnerships are essential to the effective teaching and learning of our students.  The school day is 8:45 am. – 3:35 p.m. and CYO provides both early morning and after school care.  Greenwood is the recipient of a federal grant that will provide free student meals for five years.

Our English Language Arts program is designed to augment students’ mastery of the five core areas of language arts literacy: phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. This mastery is achieved through small guided reading groups providing differentiated instruction to challenge students at various levels of engagement. Instructional time for language arts literacy includes 90 minutes of reading and writing.  Schoolwide, Orton Gillingham, iReady, and RAZ Kids are used as instructional tools.

In regards to mathematics, Greenwood continues to utilize Math Expressions- a program that emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, Math Exemplars, First In Math, iReady, 360 Math, and differentiated instruction. Math instruction takes place 80 minutes a day.

Greenwood Elementary is a two-section school.  We offer ESL, Basic Skills, Title, Resource Room, Guidance, Character Education, and Related Arts instruction.  Our third, fourth, and fifth grade students are semi-departmentalized.  One teacher presents ELA and Science, while another teacher presents Mathematics and Social Studies.  Our first grade students also move between two classrooms for a shared learning experience.  The Greenwood Staff includes a Culture Climate Specialist/School Community Liaison, Instructional Coach, Restorative Practices Guidance Counselor, and shared Child Study Team.

In addition to formal instruction, Greenwood staff host a variety of programs to foster strong home-school-community relationships that support student learning. These programs include, but are not limited to: classroom events, outdoor K-5 events, concerts, and ELA/Math workshops.  Greenwood hosts four Stakeholders Meetings annually for our parents, families, and community members to learn about K-5 student activities, grants, school budget, classroom resources, and volunteer opportunities.

Through partnerships and on-going communication with our parents, students, and staff, Greenwood seeks to ensure that its school community is able to personify the six core values: Respect, Trustworthiness, Empathy, Perseverance, Integrity, and Responsibility every day.
